Baked Camembert in Its Box

Baked Camembert in its box melts into a rich hot cheese dip with garlic, white wine and thyme. Serve it with bread, pickles, onions, crackers or apple slices for an easy appetizer.

Ingredients

  • 1 Camembert (whole wheel in a wooden box)
  • 3 tablespoons dry white wine
  • 2 cloves garlic (cut into 8 lengthwise pieces)
  • A few sprigs of fresh thyme
  • Silverskin onions
  • Pickles (small gherkins)
  • Bread cubes or breadsticks
  • Jam (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F or 180°C.
  2. Take the cheese out of its box.
  3. Staple the seam if the box is glued, so it doesn't fall apart when cooking.
  4. Line the inside of the box with foil then put the cheese back in. Score it in a crisscross pattern across the top.
  5. Cut the garlic lengthwise into eighths so you get spike shapes.
  6. Make 8 holes in the top of the cheese with a knife and poke a garlic spike into each hole.
  7. Drizzle the wine over the top and scatter the fresh thyme over it.
  8. Bake the cheese on a baking tray for 15 minutes.
  9. Put it in the middle of a big plate and arrange gherkins, bread and whatever else you want around the outside for the guests to dip into the runny cheese.
  10. I like to serve jam with baked Camembert - any flavor goes!
