To begin, set the oven to heat to 350F/180C. As the oven is heating, use a bit of butter to grease an oven tray thoroughly.
Place a pan on the stove to heat, and add the butter to the pan as it gets hot.
Melt the butter and stir in the syrup, milk, sugar, and butter.
Let the mixture boil before quickly turning off the heat and setting it aside.
Sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl and stir well.
Add the boiled butter mixture to the dry ingredients, and mix until combined thoroughly.
Pour the mixture into the greased oven tray.
Place the tray into the oven, and lower the temperature of the oven to 325F/160C.
Let the gingerbread bake for an hour, and test to see if the top of the loaf is springy to indicate that it is cooked.
Serve with butter or the topping of your choice.
