Butter Swim Biscuits Recipe

butter swim biscuits recipe

If you’re in the mood for a quick and easy biscuit recipe, you’ve got to try these delicious butter swim biscuits! With just 6 simple ingredients, you can whip these up and have them ready to enjoy in a little over half an hour. All you need is flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, buttermilk, and melted butter.

Once they’re out of the oven, you’ll be greeted by crumbly, buttery goodness that’s simply irresistible. These biscuits are best enjoyed piping hot, but they’re just as tasty cold if you can’t wait. They feature a soft, fluffy inside and a beautifully crisp, golden-brown crust that’s hard to resist.

You won’t believe how moist and tender these come out. All that butter doesn’t just make them taste good but also keeps them moist and seals in all that flavor. Enjoy some for breakfast, perhaps with a cup of coffee and maybe eggs and bacon or grilled pears or a fruit cup.

Why are Swim Biscuits Called That?

Now, you might be wondering why they’re called swim biscuits. Well, it’s because they’re practically taking a luxurious swim in a bath of butter before hitting the oven. They’re so rich and moist that you won’t even need to add more butter unless you want to indulge a little extra.

Whether you munch on one or two as a snack or pair them with your favorite breakfast items, these biscuits are sure to be a hit. I love them warm for breakfast.

Can You Make Swim Biscuits Ahead?

Yes and then you can either enjoy them cold or warm them back up for 10 minutes in the oven. Oh, and they’re portable too so you could wrap one in foil and then enjoy it for lunch or as a tasty snack later in the day.

How to Store Swim Biscuits

These will keep for up to 2 days if you keep them in a Ziploc bag or wrap them tightly in foil. Keep them at room temperature. Would you rather freeze some? You can add them to a freezer-safe container or freezer Ziploc bag and they’ll be good for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.

Is There an Alternative to the Buttermilk?

Sure. Add 2 tablespoons of either lemon juice or white vinegar to a measuring jug. Add enough milk to make 2 cups of liquid and leave it alone for 5 minutes. You can then use it in place of the buttermilk. It works but doesn’t deliver as much tang though.

Swim Biscuits Recipe Ingredients

  • Buttermilk: See above for how to make your own.
  • Flour: I used all-purpose flour. You could sub gluten-free if needed.
  • Sugar: A tablespoon of white sugar sweetens the biscuits and also helps achieve a golden, crispy top.
  • Butter: If you want to use whipped butter, use 1/3 cup extra.
  • Baking powder: To get the texture just right.
  • Salt: To contrast with the sweetness and get the flavor just right.

These swim butter biscuits make such a delicious snack and you can enjoy them for breakfast or brunch. Although there’s plenty of butter in these, they’re best served with even more butter! These are really easy to make, even if you don’t make biscuits often – or at all!

With these, the biscuit dough is added straight from the mixing bowl into a baking dish with melted butter in there. The hot butter crisps up the edges and keeps them fluffy and soft inside – in short, perfection! As they’re not spaced out in the baking dish they tend to expand upwards rather than across, making them quite high like bakery-style biscuits.

You can also tinker with your swimming biscuits however you wish, adding shredded sharp cheddar cheese and herbs (and bacon!) or sweetening them up with blueberry jam or cinnamon sugar.
