My Homemade Chicken Satay Sauce

I have a guilty pleasure. Sometimes late at night I crave fries. I heat up the oven to 400F and add some oven fries.

I use the extra crisp ones, they’re like the deep fried kind but less fattening. It’s bad enough eating fries at night without having to eat fattening ones!

And what do I fancy with my fries? Ketchup? No, not really. Mayonnaise? Nope. I know – homemade satay sauce! The cravings for this Southeastern Asia sauce are real.

The fries take 25 minutes to bake but the satay sauce is ready within 2 minutes, sometimes 1 minute. Yes it’s that quick to make. And all you need to make it are 3 ingredients. The peanut butter can be crunchy, smooth, reduced-fat, whatever you have. The soy sauce can be regular or reduced sodium. The honey should be the runny type not the pale yellow set kind.

Now you know how to prepare it, you can try this wonderfully quick and easy recipe. In fact you will never need to look at this recipe again. Just remember the 3 ingredients.

Are Peanut Sauce and Satay the Same Thing?

Not exactly. Satay sauce (sometimes spelt saté sauce) is associated with Thailand but it originated in Indonesia. It might be known as peanut sauce in the West but it’s known as satay sauce (bumbu kacang) over in Indonesia, since it often comes with Indonesian satay (grilled meat on skewers).

Is satay sauce Chinese, a lot of people ask. You can get peanut sauce at Chinese restaurants but it isn’t the same as the Indonesian version apart from the fact it has peanuts in it! Try both to see which you prefer. I like the Indonesian version and find it a wonderful dipping sauce as well as a tasty sauce for beef skewers.

Can You Freeze Satay Sauce?

Yes! I like to freeze it in portions in Ziploc freezer bags. If you freeze the bags flat (don’t forget to label them!) you can stack them on top of each other to maximize freezer space.

Can You Reheat Satay Sauce?

You can microwave it on half-power or reheat it in a pan on the stove, adding a little water if it’s too thick.

How Long is Peanut Sauce Good in the Fridge?

It should keep at least 5 days in an airtight container. Make sure, when reheating, you stir it well so all the ingredients are well blended. If you have some leftover satay sauce, you can warm it up and serve with baguette slices for dipping, as a snack. Yum!

3 Ingredient Satay Sauce

The satay sauce you can buy is loaded with sugar, so why not make your own? This satay sauce recipe calls for just 3 ingredients and you can make it in a few minutes. So simple!

  • Author: Victoria Haneveer
  • Prep Time: 5 mins
  • Total Time: 5 mins
  • Yield: 4 1x
  • Category: Sauce
  • Cuisine: Southeast Asian

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 8 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 8 tablespoons runny honey

Instructions

  1. Add some peanut butter, soy sauce and honey to a dish or measuring cup. You will need about the same measure of each item – a couple tablespoons per person.
  2. Grab a fork and beat the mixture until smooth.
  3. Test it and see what you can taste. The main flavor should be the peanut butter and the honey should add a little sweetness while the soy sauce adds a touch of salt.
  4. If it is too sweet, add a little more soy sauce.
  5. If it’s too salty, add more honey.
  6. If it’s just right, great!

Notes

  • Replace the soy sauce with tamari if you wish, the honey with ‘vegan honey’ or a sugar-free alternative.
  • As for the peanut butter, you could try almond butter or another nut butter. I haven’t done this but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.
